Christian Pulisic has been the talk of American soccer for a couple years now, so it’s hard to believe he’s still only 19. Born in Hershey, Pennsylvania, Pulisic is the embodiment of what American soccer should strive to be. Hard-working, skilled, and mature beyond his years, he is a perfect example of what US Soccer can achieve.
However, his rise to fame has polarized fans around the world. In typical American fashion, many fans were quick to overrate him and place the weight of US Soccer on his shoulders. Although the latter is partly true, it doesn’t justify the former. While an exceptional talent, Pulisic is not on the level on Mbappe, Dembele, and many other young stars.
But while he may be overrated in the US, it’s the complete opposite in Europe. Many Europeans see him as another Landon Donovan; a good player, but never destined to make it in the big leagues. This is also wrong, as Pulisic is already playing in the German top flight and the Champions League, and excelling.
Despite the pressure and negative feedback, Pulisic has continued to grow as a player. He was the youngest American to score for his country, and the youngest American to score in the Champions League. In 2016/17, Pulisic notched 14 goals and 15 assists in 34 appearances, an unbelievable achievement by anyone’s standards.
However, having spent his entire professional career at Borussia Dortmund, it may be time for a change, especially with the firing of Thomas Tuchel. Too many times young players are afraid to leave their comfort zone, and this ultimately caps their potential.
It’s time for a change of scenery for Pulisic. Liverpool, Chelsea, and Arsenal are among the many clubs interested in buying the highly touted youngster. The best fit for him would be at a club like Chelsea, who are desperately in need of a right-winger. The addition of Maurizio Sarri could prove to be a turning point in Pulisic’s career, as he can take the American to another level. Liverpool would be a viable option, but he would struggle to find minutes, competing with the likes of Sadio Mane and Mohammed Salah.
So where now for Pulisic? In reality, it’s all up to him. He holds all the cards, and can finally become the star that the US has desperately needed. Many doubters have said he would flop in Europe. He proved them wrong. People said he’s too young to lead the US. He proved them wrong. Christian Pulisic is not another Freddy Adu, or Julian Green, or even Landon Donovan. He’s here to stay, and he’s here to leave his mark on the US.
Haha of course he would be a good fit for Chelsea. But on a serious note, another great article. Your future is bright
