Inter Miami CF – An Honest Fan Review

As assembled, Inter Miami are perhaps one of the worst football teams I’ve ever had the displeasure of watching. I’m sorry, but the truth hurts. As a new fan of the club, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited before the match against D.C. United last night.

However, my unwavering optimism proved to be my downfall once again, as I was quickly introduced to the plethora of problems that currently plague this club.

For starters, Phil Neville. Absolutely and utterly clueless. Are we positive the guy even has his coaching badges?

I can’t recall a passage of play last night where Miami were able to string 10-15 passes together, and that’s concerning. The players lack any sort of positional awareness on the pitch, and just seem to be going through the motions. D.C. United were far from exceptional last night, but it’s amazing how basic structure and positional awareness can transform a team.

Offensively, Inter Miami’s issues aren’t much better, especially in midfield.

Tactically, I’m not convinced that playing a 4-3-3 with no advanced midfielders is the best solution for this team (or any team, for that matter). Miami’s midfield woes continue with Matuidi, who refuses to make any positive runs and is seemingly allergic to carrying the ball forward. As a result, there’s a massive gap on the pitch between the forwards and the midfield (I can’t understand why Matuidi isn’t busting a lung to get into the box here, but I guess that’s above my pay grade).

Finally, the fitness levels. Absolutely shocking, to say the least. D.C. United were stronger, fitter, hungrier, and ran us ragged all over the park. I’d understand if our issues were solely on-the-ball, due to the glaring lack of talent in the squad. But, at the bare minimum, all fans can ask for is effort, yet the Inter Miami players showed none last night. If that doesn’t speak volumes, I’m not sure what will.

So, if the players can’t pass, can’t run, and can’t be motivated, it begs the question: What is Phil Neville actually even doing in training? I’m fairly certain Neville will continue to get time, as annual coach turnover isn’t ideal for a club. However, even after just one game, it’s hard for me to see a future where Inter Miami can be successful with Neville at the helm.

Maybe I’m overreacting, and maybe last night as just an anomaly. But, if it wasn’t and if I’m right, it begs another question: What are we actually good at? I don’t see any bright spots in this team, outside a certain Scotsman.

Speaking of, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the players. Neville is certainly at fault, but players aren’t absolved from blame either. Blaise Matuidi, do I really need to say more? I’m 99% sure he’s here on vacation, and doesn’t seem to want to take on the role of a leader at ALL. Outside Lewis Morgan, I’m struggling to see any real hunger or motivation in the side. Even after just one game, it’s very easy to see who the standout performers in this team are, and Morgan is one of them.

I can’t say I’m looking forward to taking on Orlando City this Friday, but it can only get better from here, right? Right?

  1. Great analysis. I agree the midfield is weak. They need to change if we want score goals.
